Please have a go at this maths challenge. Post your comments on here with your name and year and I will choose one person to receive a special prize!
As well as working out the value of your name, try to think about the questions above to extend your mathematical thinking.
My name (Joanna) is worth 13 points…who can beat my score? Can anyone match it? My nickname is worth 9 points…can you work out what it is?
I will choose a winner randomly from everyone who has a go so please just have a go and try your best. I will award a merit to anyone who can explain why different letters have a different value and to anyone who can make a sentence with exactly 100 points.
I will pick the winner and award merits on Monday 2nd February so make sure you have a go before then. Please encourage your friends and family to try too.
Longer names aren’t always worth more because different letters equal different amount of point e.g Buzz has 4 letters and Rosie has 5 letters but Buzz=24 and Rosie= 5.
Some letters are worth more than others because they get used less so if you use it is a achievement. All vowels are worth 1 because in most words there is at least 1 vowel.

Wild is 8 points – a lovely even number and double the number of letters. Reception love doubles – I wonder if anyone else has a number that can be doubled or halved by 2?
Reception is 13 – a lot of vowels that don’t give high scores.
